Wego signs off on ASEANTA web deal

BANGKOK, 25 March 2011 — ASEAN Tourism Association signed off, Thursday, on the final verison of an agreement drafted last January that authorises the Singapore-based travel comparisons website, Wego.Com, to market and build bookings through the association’s website Southeastasia.Org.

Wego.Com was involved in Aseanta’s official website from its launch in 2009, sub-contracted by USAID’s ACE project, which funded the site’s development until October year.

Once USAID funding dried up, ASEANTA assumed full ownership control of the website and by last November announced it was looking for suitable companies prepared to manage and market the site on its behalf.

During the Asean Tourism Forum in Phnom Penh last January, ASEANTA confirmed it had decided to give Wego.Com a new contract, that was officially signed, Thursda,  at the close of the ASEANTA board meeting held on the sidelines of the e-Travel Mart event.

Martin Symes

Wego.Com’s CEO, Martin Symes, told TTR Weekly he was prepared to invest in order to build bookings through the site.

“They are down (bookings) at the moment, but we can support the site and build it through marketing campaigns,” he said.

Mr Symes was attending the first ASEAN e-Travel Mart held in Bangkok that attracted around 400 delegates representing both technology and tourism companies.

Meanwhile, Wego signed a string of new Australian travel partners, earlier this month, that have now been integrated into Wego Travel Search.

New flight partners include the likes of Expedia Australia, Jetabroad & STA Australia, with new hotel partners Worldwide Holidays & Hamilton Island plus new deals & package providers Intrepid Travel.

Late last year, Wego Pte Ltd and Leisure & Lifestyle Information Services Pvt Ltd, operators of the Indian travel content and community site announced a merger of their operations, which extended Wego.Com’s footprint in the lucrative Indian outbound travel market.
